The Summerland Site

Our campaign is working to establish a memorial on the Summerland site, proportionate in size to this huge tragedy, transforming it from its derelict state since 2006 into a meaningful and fitting tribute to the 50 lives lost and all those affected over all these years, as well as residents and visitors to the island.  In 2013 Douglas Council placed a memorial in the Kaye Gardens, far removed from the site where the tragedy happened.  Let's bring the remembrance home.

Honouring the Past: A Call for a Memorial at the Historic Summerland Site in the Isle of Man

The derelict Summerland site on Dougla Promenade in the Isle of Man has stood as a poignant reminder of the tragic fire in 1973, which claimed 50 lives, over 80 injured and left a lasting impact on the community. Since 2006 the site has remained derelict, with its crumbling structures and overgrown landscapes telling a story of neglect and loss. The site remains a significant part of Manx history, plans for redevelopment are often proposed but not progressed by developers. We are passionate about the need for a fitting memorial to be placed at the site itself.

Remembering the Summerland Disaster: A Tribute at Kaye Gardens

In the Kaye Gardens at the time of the 25th anniversary a small stone with a couple of lines was unveiled at the back of the garden.  This was deemed sufficient by Douglas Council to honour the 50 lives lost!

At the time of the 40th anniversary the larger stones were unveiled which included the names of the 50 killed.  Many of those who lost loved ones were not made aware of the unveiling or commemorative services.

An annual one minute's silence is held on the Summerland site where all are welcome. In a short but poignant service we lay a wreath and our floral tributes on the tarmac of the car park. Since 2006 this is all that is considered sufficient by the Isle of Man Government (who own the site) to commemorate and remember those who came to visit the island and never went home.

We are committed establishing a meaningful memorial at the site, honouring the lasting impact of the event on the Isle of Man and providing a space for those affected to be remembered with respect.
